I played a bootleg copy of Minecraft... and there was something terribly wrong with it

I?ve been wanting to play Minecraft for months now. My friend, Kenny, knows this?and also knows I?m broke right now.
So he very generously ?got? me a copy. How he got it, I did not ask.
So there I was, on Friday night, opening my (probably bootleg) copy after a stressful week. The house was quiet; my boyfriend was out for the night with his buddies. I?d made myself a cup of chamomile tea and was curled up with a blanket, ready to play. I already knew the basic controls: I?d seen way too many videos on Youtube.
I spawned in a field with a few blocky trees. The square sun hovered over the hill in front of me. I started towards it, veering left and right, trying to get a feel for the terrain. Strangely, I didn?t see any animals. No pigs, no goats, no chickens.
But I didn?t spend too long exploring. I was in Survival mode, and I know you're supposed to make the most of that first day: cut down trees, get some coal and cobblestone, build a shelter to keep you safe at night. I wanted to build a cute little house in the field but ended up running out of time, so I dug a hole into the side of a hill. Stuck a torch on the wall, cut a 1x1 hole for a window, and called it a day.
That's when things got weird.
After a few minutes of nighttime, the mobs started spawning. But they weren't any of the normal ones: no zombies, skeleton archers, or creepers.
There was only one mob. A villager-like creature with grayish skin.
The weirdest thing was their eyes. They weren?t just a few pixels?they were detailed. Circular and bloodshot, with no irises or pupils.
?And they let kids play this?? I muttered to myself. ?Yeesh. My mom never would?ve let me play this.?
A few of them huddled around my window. Unlike zombies, they made no noise. All night I watched their grayish shoulders flit in and out of view as they bumped into each other, each trying to get a glimpse of me through my little window.
There was something else weird, too. As far as I could tell, the sky had no stars or moon. It was just black, with nothing else.
I hunkered down in my little hidey-hole until the sun had risen. The creepy creatures were nowhere to be seen.
?Well,? I said to myself, ?I think I?ll try mining today, instead.?
I made myself a wooden pickaxe, then a stone one. I dug through the soil and rock, deeper and deeper, until I fell into a cave. It was dark. I grabbed one of my seven torches and stuck it to the wall.
Stone, coal, and some white-colored stone. ?Cool,? I muttered, as I mined some of the coal. Then I went forward into the darkness, stuck another torch onto the wall. On and on until I ran out of torches.
But, aha! Now I had more coal. I quickly made some more torches, and continued.
The cave descended. The floor grew more steep, the steps downwards being two or sometimes even three blocks high. I continued, though, knowing the deeper I was, the more likely I?d find diamonds. Not that I could even mine them with a stone pickaxe. That I knew, from all those videos.
But this cave didn?t seem very much like the ones I?d seen in the videos. I thought zombies, and all the scary mobs, lived in the caves. And those ginormous spiders, too. But I?d yet to see another living thing down here.
Deeper I went, and then I did hear something eerie: a sort of deep whooshing sound. I looked all around, looking for the source; but all I saw were my own torches, climbing up into the cave above me.
I continued further into the cave. And further. It was weird?I thought at some point, you hit lava or bedrock, and you can?t go any further down. But this cave seemed to go down and down and down, with no signs of stopping.
No signs of diamonds, either.
I stopped on a small stone landing, before the cave continued even more steeply down. Got out my pickaxe. ?Seems as good a place as any,? I said, as I dug the pickaxe into the rock. I?d seen the videos on diamond mining, on the optimal spacing of tunnels, all of that. And who knows? Maybe I?d get lucky and find some iron along the way. For some reason, the only ore I?d seen yet was coal.
I watched the cracks appear on the stone block. ?Stupid stone pickaxe,? I muttered. It finally broke, and then I started on the next one. I only got several blocks in before?clink!?my pickaxe broke.
?Daaaammit,? I said to myself, heaving a sigh. I turned around, to make a crafting block?
And froze.
There, at the entrance to my tunnel, stood one of the gray creatures.
It stared at me with those white, bloodshot eyes. So perfectly detailed compared to the rest of its pixelated body. It didn?t move, didn?t advance towards me?just stood there, frozen. Watching me.
?You little ****er.?
I switched to the stone sword, started running towards it?
And then I froze again.
Because something caught my eye. Not something in the game. Something here, in real life. Oh no, no, no?
The little white light next to my webcam was on.
I snapped the laptop shut. Slid it onto the floor. And then I sat there, panting, my entire body numb. With shaking hands, I picked up my phone.
And sent a text.
Kenny? how exactly did you get Minecraft for me?
