ELI5: Why are lion heads such a common motif on water fountains?
Maybe this is just an anecdotal observation. I've seen lion heads adorning everything from flags, coats of arms, clothing, etc. But I never really understood why there are so many garden fountains depicting a disembodied lion head with water trickling out of it's mouth (example).
I'm aware there's a famous Merlion fountain in Singapore - that makes sense to me being a mythical water creature. But why are regular lions a commonplace feature in fountain designs? What's the cultural/symbolic significance?
