ELI5: Why can't sand from places like the Sahara be used in concrete?
So last year I remember reading articles about thieves stealing sand from fiver banks and lake shores.. mainly overseas. Illegally mining it for use in concrete. My question is, why can't/don't people use desert sand instead? Seems certainly plentiful enough. Is it the miniscule size that's a problem?
