Well, somewhere in the distant past, there was probably some natural/evolutionary reason for it that no longer applies today. Maybe so they could fit in smaller caves to talk about boys and ponies in private... DISCLAIMER: The first half of that answer was serious, the second half was a joke.

@Thegeorge76: Funny... Your anagramic 2nd half, was probably what I was thinking too, back in the day when cross breading and inter relations didn't distort the formula a bit. Ha ha. We'd probably be talking about ponies in small places and how everything fits together....
