How To Survive The Afterlife Part Two: The Woman Who Does Not Exist

Hey all! Because of the overwhelming support for my last post, I decided to continue sharing my experiences in the afterlife. Just to clarify, I am in safe location, but I may have to move again, so I?ll make this one quick.
Rule #2: After you wake up in your birth place, stay where you are for about 2 and a half minutes. You will be visited by a woman in her late 30s. She will explain most all of the basics of what is happening to you. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY YOU DRAW BLOOD AROUND HER.
Man, this is one that I really wish I knew beforehand.
If this rule seems more specific than the last one, that?s because I am confident that most everybody in the afterlife has had an experience with this woman. Without her guidance, I?m willing to bet not a single person would have survived more than a day.
I opened my eyes to find myself back at the beginning, in the exact same one bedroom apartment as before. I tried sitting up in my bed, only to realize I couldn?t move my torso. In fact, I couldn?t move any part of my body, and I quickly realized I was paralyzed from the neck down.
Damn that Frank guy, I thought, whatever he injected me with just ruined my chances of finding help.
My only choice was to stay laid down on the bed, observing the room. I quickly noticed that along with paralyzing me, Frank had also cleaned up my bloody nose, as I could feel a cotton ball in my right nostril.
After what felt like an eternity of just sitting on that bed, waiting, I tried moving my hand, and to my surprise, I could move it again, along with the rest of my body. I sat up, thinking this time before I did anything, and finally decided that my only option was to return to whatever was outside, and hope I could find out just what exactly was going on.
I was just about to open the door to exit the apartment, when I heard a voice from behind me speak.
?I wouldn?t go out there if I were you.? The voice said.
As you could tell from my last encounter, I am not the bravest man. I immediately jumped up with a yelp, and started frantically trying the knob on the door. Surprisingly, the door was locked this time, and after a couple seconds of panicked jiggling, I finally turned to face this mysterious person.
It was a woman, about the same height as me. Her appearance made her look about 35 years old, and she had an neutral, tired expression that made me sense she had done this many times before.
Nonetheless, she still forced a smile as I stoically mumbled, ?please don?t kill me?.
?Listen man, I?m one of the only things here that won?t try and kill you? She chuckled?
?Where is... here?? I squeaked
?You?re in the afterlife dude, isn?t that obvious??
In the back of my mind, I knew it to be true. It all made sense, considering most of what I remembered before all of... this. But, I did not want to accept this to be true, so a part of me still decided to argue.
?The afterlife? Is that some sort of sick joke??, I spat out at her.
?Nope? she replied, now appearing to be chewing on gum while talking to me, ?and if you don?t accept that reality pretty soon, you?re gonna end up even more dead than you already are.?
?But, my memories? My family? My whole life?? I pleaded.
?All gone, your last memory was of your death, blah blah blah, can we move on to your other questions?? The woman looked impatient.
Once again, I had a vision of the car crash.
It was a Saturday evening like any other for me, one that I got the choice to spend with Emily, which I happily obliged to, using the time I got to spend with her to go out to eat, catch a movie, and spend some quality time with my girlfriend.
It was all good and well until the drive back home. God, why did I have to drive on the highway? Why did I have to drive at all? I don?t even know what we were fighting about on the way back. I don?t think my brain wanted me to remember, because I was wrong. I was usually wrong during arguments, but I was always that type of person to never give in to the other side, and on this particular night, I had been as stubborn as a mule, since the start of the drive. Why couldn?t I just give in to her? She was always right during our arguments. I just had to tell her she was right, but no, my smart ass just had to argue with her that entire ride, up until the point where I swerved right in front of a semi truck.
Even as we both slammed the brakes, I knew it was too late. I felt immense pain for a bit, total blackness, then, nothing.
Tears started falling down my eyes, as I fully realized in that moment what was happening to me. I could never return to my old life, I would never see my family or friends again, and I sure as hell would never be able to see Emily again, apologize to her, hug her and say I was sorry for everything.
The lady noticed my tears, and I thought I saw a look of pity on her face, as she tried to cheer me up.
?Hey now... it?s ok? she said awkwardly, ?We need to get moving to the nearest settlement now, and you can sort out your... biz... there?
Suddenly, I felt the tiniest bit of hope. ?There are safe havens in this world?? I asked, sniffling.?
?Well, not exactly safe, but humans are smart, they found a way to keep monsters out of certain areas, so they could live peacefully there.? The lady explained, spitting out her gum.
I thought back to when Frank had ignored the men in white suits, after he thought they were monsters. Did he think that door was a monster barrier?
?So there are monsters in this world?? I clarified.
She snorted, ?You?re damn right there are monsters in this world, now can we start our trek before nightfall? I?d rather not have to see you get your face ripped off before we make it to the settlement.?
I made a quick choice in my mind whether or not I would go with the mysterious lady. Option A was to follow this lady, either die by her hands because, you know, it?s a trap! Or make it to safety in this so-called settlement, and Option B was to wander this city alone again, probably ending up at another HELP place, and getting my soul sucked out by a monster or whatever.
Using logical reasoning, I deducted that only one of those outcomes gave me a chance of surviving, so I elected to go with the woman.
?Alright, I?ll go with you, how far away is this place?? I asked.
The woman beamed at me ?Tell you on the way there? she said mischievously, ?By the way, names Daphne?
?Like from Scooby Doo??
?Exactly from Scooby Doo.?
We started our way back down the streets, turning at random points whenever Daphne would say to go. I placed my full trust in her, and decided to strike up a conversation during our journey.
?So what?s with the whole apartment thing?? I asked
She looked at me briefly and said, ?Oh that? That?s just where you were born.?
?Really??
?Yeah, you always wake up where you were born, it happens to everyone,? she explained, ?In fact, that?s one of the reasons that we have to make such a long journey. The humans in charge of the settlements placed them tactically, so that they would be closest to all the most popular places of birth?
?So, the hospital?? I guessed.
?Correct,? Daphne said, ?And since you were born in an apartment building, in the middle of a city, it?s gonna take a while for us to get all the way to the settlement, considering we are nowhere near a hospital.?
?Gee, I?m gonna have to the thank my mom, if I find her here,? I said sarcastically
?Don?t count yourself as unlucky yet,? She gave me a serious look, ?There are many people who were born way worse. Many people wake up in alleyways, sometimes right next to monsters. Those people never survive long. I always come just a little too late to find their mangled corpses, it?s even worse if your birth spot had been altered or destroyed.?
Daphne stopped dead in her tracks, and stared into the distance. She looked very afraid.
?What happens when they get destro-?
?Shhhhh? Daphne hushed me quickly
I saw the worried look on her face, and I knew something had gone wrong.
?Listen closely,? Daphne said, slowly and quietly, still staring off into the distance, ?On my signal, you are going to sprint as fast as you can to the left, and only to the left, until you are out of the city, you hear me? I will meet you right outside the limits, and no matter what you hear behind you, you keep on running till your legs don?t work.?
?But why-?
?No questions!? Daphne whispered, ?May your soul be given mercy on from above.?
I was confused, but aware, and ready to run, because I knew something bad would happen if I didn?t.
?Alright, ready? Three... Two... One... RUN!? Daphne yelled
I was initially shocked by the sudden yell, and I stood there for a split second, until I heard an ear piercing shriek from behind me, and adrenaline filled my body. Now, I was no track athlete, but I ran faster than I ever had before that day.
As I ran, I could hear the shrieks coming closer and closer to me, until they sounded like they were right behind me. I continued to run for my life, never looking back.
Even though I was only two thirds of the way to the limits, my lungs were starting to give out. I really wasn?t a track athlete.
Even as my breath shortened, and my lungs were crippling, I continued sprinting, fueled by the blood curdling screams rapidly advancing behind me.
I was barely able to zoom past the outskirts as I collapsed onto the ground in exhaustion. I felt terrible, but at the moment, I somehow knew I was safe.
I decided to rest on a nearby bench for a while, until I saw a familiar sight walk toward me in the distance. As Daphne neared on me, I demanded to know what just happened.
?You where being hunted by monsters,? she said, ?That?s all I?m telling you.?
I could tell by her tone that it was indeed, all she was going to tell me, so I decided to drop the subject, and we continued with our trip.
After what seemed like another 2 hours of walking, I could finally make out a set of walls in the distance.
?That the place?? I asked.
?Yup.? Daphne said abruptly, ?You should be able to enter, you are human, after all.?
?What about you?? I asked. ?Aren?t you coming too??
?Can?t,? Daphne said, ?I?m a monster, even if they wanted to let me in, their barriers would block me.?
?Seriously?? I said. Even though that wasn?t the most surprising news I had heard all day, it still shocked me.
?Yeah, and a pretty old one, at that. But anyways, this is where we divert paths, and you live your life mostly peacefully inside of this settlement?
?Damn,? I said thoughtfully, ?Well, it was nice meeting you, I guess. Thanks for the help.?
?Don?t mention it,? she said, ?Peace.?
She started to walk away, and impulsively, I called out, ?Wait!?
She turned around, and the cotton in my nose fell out.
I could feel the tiniest bit of blood dripping down my face, from my previously mentioned bloody nose, but immediately, the tempo in the area changed.
I looked at Daphne to see she was staring at me, at my blood, almost piercing me with her eyes. I called our her name in confusion, only to see her face starting to become shriveled up. Her eyes changed to that of the creature from the previously mentioned building, completely black, except with her, there was the tiniest of white in her pupils, so you could tell she was staring directly at you.
That was already disturbing enough for me, but she got down on all fours, and, get this, grew 2 extra legs, one on each side of her torso.
Now Daphne was looking more like a weird humanoid spider, mixed with one of the creatures from before, except without the smile.
This new Daphne Creature stared at me, and I started back, only because I was once again frozen in horror.
We stayed staring at each other for a couple seconds, before the Daphne Creature opened its mouth, revealing a jagged set of sharp teeth, and let out the worst blood curdling screech you would ever have heard. It immediately scurried towards me, exactly like a spider.
Once again, I was running for my life, and I knew this time I my survival chance probably wouldn?t be as high this time.
As I sprinted towards the door I knew I only had a matter of seconds before it caught up to me, and I was dead. I was almost to the door, right in front of it, in fact, when I tripped and fell, flat on my face. I ignored my severe pains, and continued trying to crawl towards the door, knowing that I was about to die.
As I waited for the inevitable, I turned around and realized that the Daphne creature would not come near me.
Closer inspection made me realize it couldn?t come near me. That was when I remembered the barriers Daphne was talking about earlier.
I was fairly certain that that was the only thing that saved me, as I had just enough strength to bang my knuckles on the door at the entrance a few times, before I promptly fainted.
That seems like a good place to cut off the story. I pretty sure I couldn?t continue it right now, even if I wanted to, because I hear the knocking at the door again, and I know I am not safe right now.
I will continue to update in the future, but for today, just remember:
After you wake up in your birth place, stay where you are for about 2 and a half minutes. You will be visited by a woman in her late 30s. She will explain most all of the basics of what is happening to you. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY YOU DRAW BLOOD AROUND HER
