Men dating accomplished women, how do you deal with being supportive and not intimidated by your partner?

I had someone tell me the fact that I'm a scientist turns them off, but I "make up for it in many other ways". My career and my intelligence are something I'm proud of and if anything, would prefer that my partner values them - not considers them a deficiency to "make up for". At worst, it would be acceptable to have a neutral attitude and not care what I do for a living, but focus on my personality and other passions. This statement left me speechless. Is this common with men? Do you get intimidated or turned off by a woman's profession? Doesn't that sound like some internal battles and stereotyping that needs to be addressed?
