Everyone in my town hears the same voice in their head at the same time every day

It started three years ago. I live in a small town, a very small town. Like a rural, everyone-knows-everyone type of town. I was at work when it first happened. A girl's voice, echoing through my head: "You know nothing." The voice came from all directions, as if it was coming from some invisible intercom. At first I was afraid it was just me. Was I going nuts?

I think everyone in town was thinking the same thing until eventually, we all realized that everyone had heard the same thing. People began to talk to each other about it in hushed tones. The next day, it happened again. At the exact same time: 12:00pm. Same voice, same sentence.

We speculated as to whose voice it was. And where it came from. Although no conclusive answers were ever really found, one theory prevailed and became pretty much an unofficial explanation. Most folks agree that the voice, wherever it was coming from, was that of Arlene Reyes.

Arlene was by all accounts a normal enough girl. She went to the local high school in town and was on the cheer squad. But one day, a 911 call was made complaining about gunshots coming from Arlene's house. The cops, upon arrival, found Arlene drenched in blood, wielding a handgun, screaming over the corpses of her dead parents. She was shot dead by the cops after she fired the gun at them when they burst into her house.

Cops who were at the house that day said that before she was killed, Arlene had been screaming about how her parents were strangers who had broken into her house. Apparently she had some kind of episode and didn't recognize her own mom and dad when they came home from work and thought they were burglars or something.

In any case, this all happened the year before the voice began and pretty much everyone agrees that the voice is hers.

And so this continued. Every day at 12:00pm sharp everyone in town could hear Arlene's voice whisper the same thing. After a while it became semi-normal. Obviously, people still found it strange. Some people moved out of town, but for those of us that stayed, it became routine. Like the bell of a town hall clock. Folks stopped talking about it.

Until two days ago. Everybody was going about their usual business, it was by all means a standard Monday morning. I was in work when I noticed on my work computer that it had just gone 12:00. Something felt off. Why was it so quiet? Then, a strange sort of fear passed through me. There was no voice. Suddenly I was back in the same boat as I was three years ago. Was I the only one who wasn't hearing it?

I looked around and sighed with relief. Everyone else was freaking out too. I looked back at the clock. 12:01. No voice.

I came home with a chill in my spine. What was going to happen next? Something bad? Was the voice simply gone? I felt better when my husband came home. I always feel better with him around. He's big and hulking with fierce blue eyes.

The next day 12:00pm rolled around again and...still no voice. People were talking about it again, all over town. Arlene Reyes story became the focal point of town gossip yet again.

Then, today, everyone waited with baited breath to see if the voice would come back. It did. Except this time, it was different. 12:00pm came and Arlene's whisper reared its head, only this time it wasn't the same phrase we'd been hearing every days for three years.

"You fools know nothing of this town", the voice rasped. "Beware the strangers in your home."

Then, just as quickly as it came, the voice was gone. I don't know if this was better or worse than no voice at all. My boss sent everyone home from work early considering people were pretty freaked.

I arrived home, jumpy and paranoid from the creepy message the voice imparted. I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of wine. I then wandered into the living room, throwing my coat onto the armchair before collapsing onto the couch.

Suddenly, I heard the front door open and softly click closed again. My blood ran cold. ****, I forgot to put the latch on the door. Who the **** was in my house? A stranger in my home...

Shaking, I crept up off the couch and managed to get to my home office without making much noise. I tiptoed into the room and fumbled with the gun safe, extracting the revolver resting within. Checking that it was loaded, I listened out.

I could hear heavy footsteps tracking through the house. Holding the gun out in front of me, I started to make my way to the back door. I'd have to go back through the living room.

I crouched silently towards the living room door. Just as I reached for the handle, the door creaked wide open and a big, hulking man with piercing blue eyes stood before me, frowning. Screaming, I pulled the trigger on the revolver twice.

Both shots ripped through the man's chest, sending him flying onto his back. Still screaming in shock, I immediately ran to the basement and locked myself in.

I'm still in the basement as I write this, still holding the gun. I don't know how long I've been down here. A few hours, I think. Since I've been hiding down here I've heard gunshots coming from all over the neighborhood.

I don't what's gonna happen now, but I'm terrified of what the voice is going to say next.
