I (F40) had surgery on Saturday night. My partner (M39) hasn't had 'time' to call me since then desp (by Sparky)

I (F40) had surgery on Saturday night. My partner (M39) hasn't had 'time' to call me since then despite being on holiday.
My partner went on holiday on Thursday to visit his family. At the same time he was going to the airport i was being taken to hospital for appendicitis.
My surgery was on Saturday evening. I knew my partner had gone camping with his brother so didn't really expect to hear from him until Sunday night. That's fine.
Sunday night comes and I get a few messages from him saying he's just got home and is exhausted and is going to bed. Ok fair enough. I was only discharged late on sunday evening and i was also exhausted. I know he's got a lot on his plate at the moment and that his brother is going through some difficulties.
Monday morning- No message until 12.30 when he whatsapped me to say that he'd had a really busy morning with his brother and now he was going to have lunch and then a rest. I sent a slightly snarky reply saying I'd wondered why I hadn't heard from him.
Monday evening he messages me to say that he's going to meet friends for dinner. Monday night he gets home and says goodnight. In the meantime my messages are getting shorter and shorter. Recovering from appendicitis is not much fun and I'm pretty ****** off with him.
Yesterday I get a message in the evening not saying much. I finally reply and tell him I'm ****** off that he hasn't been properly in touch to check in on me. He replies after midnight saying he's sorry.
No message or further apology from him this morning until I message him at lunchtime asking him WTF. He replied via voice message on WhatsApp as he was still too busy to call me and wouldn't be free for another few hours.
I was sleeping when he finally called and now he's gone off camping again.
I am really upset. And more so because he just doesn't seem to understand exactly why I am so angry with him.
What can I say to him to make him realise how upsetting his behaviour is? His 'excuse' for not calling is that 'I'm an idiot and didn't think to call'
