ELI5: Why do older "grindhouse" films have vertical green lines sometimes?
I'm watching "Lovely but Deadly", made in 1981, but with really bad film stock. This looks like classic grindhouse cinema. Bad editing, hair on the film, etc. This movie is about as well-preserved as your grandparents super 8 home movies.
I noticed this with numerous films of the era. Why do sometimes I see vertical green lines on the picture? Sometimes you see it just for a few seconds, sometimes it's a whole scene.
What's the technical explanation for these green lines?
