ELI5: Why does playing music in the background of a social gathering put people at ease, allowing them to talk more comfortably whilst removing that awkward feeling?

Well I'm no expert, but i'd say cause music is relaxing and helps calm the nerves, so maybe you'll feel more at ease to talk to someone then if it was completely silence.
