ELI5: How is a site like SoundCloud on the verge of going out of business with ads and membership plans, but sites like Quora with no advertisement are still staying strong after all these years?

Could say the same about this site and others. Why isn't this one as busy as them? (They're not exactly on fire, but still) This one is much better set up than they are....don't understand it at all.
