No, lover can be friends also during the relationship and if relationship fails then after completely moving on ( getting over the pains and acceptance ) then you can be friends again ...IMHO

My problem is, every guy friend I have ends up wanting to be more. And when I don't want that, the friendship gets awkward and sometimes fades away. I started out friends with one guy, he wanted more and we tried it, but it didn't work out. We just couldn't go back to being just friends after that (he couldn't). I guess it just hurt him too much and he couldn't deal with it. I kind of knew it would end that way, that's some of why I didn't want to start being more than friends in the first place - I knew our friendship wouldn't be the same. And it suuuucks cause he was the best bud I've ever had, except for this one boy in third grade :)

When I find the right woman I want to start off as friends and hopefully slowly move forward to something more.

@rayminton49: I think that's a good idea, but it depends on the woman. Some women want to start as friends, some don't. Whatever way you choose to go, it shouldn't be forced. The guy I was with totally avoided going further than just friends at first, when I wanted to go right into dating. By the time he came around to wanting more, I was stuck in the friendship zone and everything got awkward. It's good to communicate and see where the other person is coming from so you're both on the same page.
