Anyone who's piggy backing on a neighbour's wifi signal - are you stealing? A new survey found one in three of us surf the web courtesy of our neighbours. Not a problem if they couldn't be bothered to password protect it maybe, but what if they did and you then hacked it - that's thieving surely?

"" The laws regarding Wi-Fi
piggybacking are different
in every jurisdiction.
Although Wi-Fi piggyback
is generally regarded as
illegal in several areas,
the laws are not always
enforced or understood.
Several people have been
prosecuted for
piggybacking off WiFi, so
you should avoid the
practice unless you are
positive piggybacking is
legal in your jurisdiction.
Wi-Fi piggybacking is the
process of using
someone's Wi-Fi internet
connection without their
permission. Wi-Fi
piggybacking is possible
because many home
networks are left
unsecured or otherwise
unprotected and anyone
within the broadcast
range of the Wi-Fi router
will be able to connect.
One of the major areas of
concern regarding Wi-Fi
piggybacking is the use
of Internet services for
illegal activity such as
identity theft or
downloading of child
pornography.
In the U.S., several people have been fined
and some have even received felony
convictions for piggybacking off of Wi-Fi
networks. The federal government has a law
making it a crime to intentionally access a
computer without authorization. This law has
been used to prosecute individuals
piggybacking on Wi-Fi networks. In addition,
countries such as Germany, the United
Kingdom and Singapore all have laws
outlawing Wi-Fi piggybacking.""
