I (34f) told husband?s (33m) uncles (48m) gf(23f) she was dating a sex offender

I?ve been having a hard time processing learning about my husband?s uncle. He was incarcerated last month for ?misfiling paperwork?. A local news source did an article on him, saying he was being charged for failing to register as a sex offender. I couldn?t believe it, so I researched it and found it all true- he tried to have sex with a 14 year old girl.
Tonight, his girlfriend texted me, asking if I would write a letter of support for him in his upcoming sentencing. I told her I couldn?t because I didn?t support him. She had no idea, and I had to tell her everything. Did I do the right thing here? I?ve certainly destroyed their relationship. This was a source of stability for uncle, and it could have kept him from reoffending.
tl;dr: I told my husband?s uncles gf she was dating a pedophile and she no longer wants to see him. Did I do the right thing? Have I caused even more strife in an unstable person?s life unjustly? He was never going to tell her, and my husband didn?t know.
