How do I help my grandpa feel self-worth now that he can?t work and ?doesn?t feel like a man? anymore?
My grandpa is 86 years old and has been working way over 40 hours a week for most of his life. Even into old age my grandparents are completely set financially for their retirement and don?t need the money AT ALL, yet my grandpa refuses to stop working and then gets upset and feels bad about himself when no one will hire him because of his age and medical condition. He recently has been dealing with cancer and is basically chair/bed bound so he can no longer work and my mom mentioned that he feels like he has nothing else to contribute to our family anymore. He feels worthless. Hates that everyone cares for him when he was always the provider and hard worker. He grew up being taught that a mans man always needs to be working and he has no other hobbies or interests than looking for jobs or ways to work. How can I help comfort him during this time? I just don?t know what to say or do or if there?s anything I can do show him that he is still a man even when he isn?t working and that he should love himself for other reasons too.
