My Best Friend Needed To Leave Her Boyfriend

Sarah is honestly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. Her golden hair, glassy blue eyes, and pale skin are a perfect contrast to my jet black tresses, big black eyes, and chocolate skin.
We were unlikely friends. I was the studious, anti-social child of strict immigrant brown parents, and she, the popular cheerleader, and an only daughter of a divorced wealthy lawyer mom. She noticed I sat alone in class, and joined me to chat me up. Now don’t get me wrong - this isn’t a makeover story. I did take care of myself and my appearance, and looked well-kept. It was the contrast in our personalities that made me believe we could never be good friends, but she changed my mind.
Whenever I went over to her place, I felt like I was living in a fantasy world. Her mom, Mrs. Hendricks, coddled us both. She was super appreciative of how hard I worked to keep my grades up, which was a nice change from my own parents always making me feel like I was never good enough. The Hendricks’ had chefs, maids, a chauffeur... Sarah had the life, and I was so glad to be part of it.
In 12th grade, just after her 18th birthday, she got a boyfriend. He was older, worked as a banker, and made good money. Mrs. Hendricks was happy her daughter chose someone “stable†as opposed to someone she wouldn’t approve of. When I heard her talk about the boyfriend, Anand, I realised brown moms and white moms aren’t all that different when it comes to the criteria for the man their daughter should be with. What kind of person Anand was didn’t matter to her at first, all that mattered was he would take care of Sarah if all went well and they ended up tying the knot someday.
Since Sarah was now 18 and could move out if she wanted to, she quickly moved in with Anand, and that’s when everything changed.
It started out small. Sarah and I were heading out to get some shopping done. Nothing glamorous, just errands. “Can you grab me some hazelnut cookies while you’re at the store?†asked Anand, typing away on his laptop. “Yeah, sure!†Sarah replied, and we went off.
We got back an hour or so later, and Anand was still home. Sarah handed Anand the pack of cookies. “Chocolate?†Anand said, raising one eyebrow. “Is that not what you wanted?†asked Sarah, her innocent face giving away her regret over having possibly mixed up something so insignificant. “No, I asked for hazelnut. Nevermind.†Anand said, visibly irritated, but not irrationally angry.
The next weekend, I announced to Anand I’d be staying over with them for the next two weeks and would be paying rent. I told him I had already talked to Sarah about it. Anand frowned. He asked Sarah why she hadn’t discussed it with him, it was his house after all, and Sarah said she didn’t remember me asking her. “How do you just forget your friend asking you if she can stay over for two weeks?†exclaimed Anand. Sweet little Sarah was a bit thrown off, but Anand sighed and hugged her. “It’s okay Sarah, I don’t mind. Just... don’t be so forgetful next time, okay?†Sarah nodded, but felt a bit uneasy. I could see it on her adorable face. I simply looked on and said nothing.
Over the next two weeks, something even stranger was happening. Anand asked Sarah to get him a tube of Carmex lip balm from the store. Sarah told me she had apparently bought it, and had the receipt too, but when Anand asked her for it, it was nowhere to be found. This happened several times over the two weeks I stayed over. He would constantly remind her to pick it up for him; she would apparently purchase it and get the receipt, and both the lip balm and the receipt would be “gone†when he asked for it. On my last day there, I was ******. I decided to get the damn lip balm from the store myself and handed it to him. “Uhh thanks, I really needed this. Sarah kept forgetting to pick it up.†he said, a bit nervous. “Sure she did.†I said. He could sense my snark and got uncomfortable. I left with my bags and belongings.
Sarah was calling her mom less and less. Her mom called me in desperation. I told her something may be up, and she seemed worried. She called Sarah and asked what was up with her, and that I had told her something may be wrong, and Sarah replied she was simply busy. After that, Sarah was calling and texting me a lot less too.
Then, one day, Sarah showed up at my door in tears. She told me she had visited a therapist, and realised she was being gaslighted. She hugged me tight, and I hugged her back. We spent some time together, and she was very fragile and emotional. I caressed her beautiful hair. She ended up kissing me, and I kissed her back. She told me she was breaking up with Anand and moving back in with her mom.
Anand did not retaliate. He simply let her go, and moved on with his life.
Sarah was sad at first, but found comfort in my arms. I stayed over with her at her mom’s most of the time, taking care of her, wiping her tears away, and spending blissful nights.
I had her. I finally had her.
The cookies were no big deal. Sarah asked me if I remembered which cookies Anand wanted, and I simply replied “chocolateâ€. The man had worked all day and just wanted his favourite cookies, so his irritation was justified. However, his visible irritation over something so small helped my cause.
She didn’t remember me asking if I could stay over because I simply hadn’t asked her.
I now have a whole stash of Carmex lip balm, thanks to me swiping them when no one was around.
Her mom wasn’t that tough to get to either. I simply told her Anand was likely gaslighting Sarah, and she talked to Sarah about this on the phone. Sarah, being naive, decided to “have a talk†with Anand about this. Anand, knowing he wasn’t really doing what everyone thought he was doing, told her her mom and I were simply cooking things up to turn her against him.
All these incidents were the perfect concoction for a therapist to declare her boyfriend a narcissist who was gaslighting her.
Oh, don’t judge me. What was I to do? I missed having Sarah all to myself. I yearned for her. I missed the lavish lifestyle her mom provided for us both. I missed the luxury and the special treatment.
And now I had it all.
Or so I thought.
Sarah started seeing a new man. A man in his 30’s. Successful, divorced with a precious kid, handsome, and loaded with family money.
She told me we were a mistake, she was simply vulnerable.
I told her it was okay. As long as she was happy, I was happy. I would still visit her regularly after she moved in with him.
Now what narrative shall we weave up to get rid of this new unsuspecting fool?
