Something weird happened in my Red Dead Redemption 2 game last night

I’ve never been superstitious. While ghost stories and legends of swamp monsters have always creeped me out, I’ve never taken them seriously. But last night, something happened that’s making me feel uneasy. It’s probably nothing, but no one that I’ve talked to has an explanation for me. I’m hoping that one of you will.
I was playing Red Dead Redemption 2 around 1AM - this has become something of a nightly tradition for me, I love the game, I’ve never been so immersed by a video game - when I came upon an old shack just south of Pleasance that I hadn’t seen before. It was weird because I was sure that I’d been there before. In fact, I was only back because I was running low on money, so I was out hunting gold bars. But at the time I didn’t think anything of it, maybe I’d just missed it before or it was something that spawned in later in the storyline. In retrospect, I should’ve known something was off, this isn’t that kind of game, and I had definitely been by there before. Anyway, it looked interesting and I’m nothing if not thorough, so I decided to check it out.
I wish I hadn’t.
Something about the building just felt off. There was almost nothing in it, just some furniture and a couple weird paintings of people that looked like they were screaming. But somehow the atmosphere felt different than it did in the rest of the world. I don’t really know how to describe it. RDR2 is probably the most realistic game that I’ve ever played, but somehow when I was in this shack it all felt even more real. And there was a meal laid out. It looked fresh, like someone had put it out moments before I walked in, but there was no sign of anyone anywhere. It was definitely creepy, but I love when developers throw in spooky Easter Eggs for you to find, and I thought maybe this was the start of some side quest.
In the back room of the house I found a doorway that led down to a cellar. Perfect, gotta be some decent loot down there. So I went down and found what can only be described as a witches lair. There were bones all over the floor, mostly animal, but only mostly. Furs hung from the wall and there were more of those strange paintings from upstairs. In the center of the room was a blood-smeared table with a knife sticking out of it and an open book. I grabbed the knife, it looked to be some sort of sacrificial blade, so at least I’d found something interesting in this shack. It was a rare weapon called the Soul Snatcher. This had to be the lair of some witch or other demon, and this must be the blade they use on their victims. I honestly don’t know what would have happened if I’d just left then. I should have, but I had to be thorough, and there was still a book to read, so I looked at it and pressed X.
The book read as follows:
and herein lies the true meaning of the world. Not to free those who are borne unto it, but to ensnare those who fail to see the truth. This world is not a staircase to a higher place, but a prison – unless the beholder is able to shed their shackles and make the necessary sacrifices. Should the path be chosen, the road will be lonely, but the reward will be eternal. Alone we stand, together we fall apart. But tread lightly, for once begun, the journey cannot be ended. Choose wisely.
I read this a few times. Honestly, I really didn’t know what to make of it. This must be the start of some side quest that I hadn’t heard about. Whatever it was, it sounded cool. This is what makes Rockstar games so great. There’s always that otherworldly aspect that you don’t expect, but gives the game that extra level of excitement.
When I closed out of the text, a box popped up on screen that said:
Do you accept the path? Should you select yes there is no returning to this point.
Yes No
As I went to click the “yes†option, I got a message from a username I didn’t recognize. It said one word, “don’t.†I assumed it was just some guy from Fortnite talking ****. Wouldn’t be the first time. I clicked on “yes.â€
The power went out. Not just the Playstation, the whole house. **** me, I hadn’t saved. It was off for just a moment, then the lights flashed back on. My TV took a little longer, and soon I was back on the Playstation home screen. I got back into the game, expecting to be back at the last time I’d saved, probably about 45 minutes ago, but it must have autosaved. I was standing right outside of the shack. Well, sort of. The shack was gone. I was standing in the same location on the map where it was, but there was no sign of it. I checked my inventory, and sure enough, there was the Soul Snatcher. No new quests had been added, and nothing else seemed to have changed. I decided to check that message out, but it was gone too. At this point I was really confused and kind of freaked out, so I decided it was a good time to stop playing for the night. I turned off the game and went to bed.
I could barely sleep. I was tossing and turning all night, and when I finally did fall asleep, I had horrible nightmares. I was tied up, naked, on a cross over a huge fire. All around me, my friends and family were screaming at me, accusing me of being a murderer and a monster. They were so loud. We were in a clearing, deep in a forest. I knew no one was coming to help me. And coming deep from within the woods, a terrible cackling laughter was echoing through the night.
I woke with a start. It felt like it had been days, but the clock only read 5:30. I couldn’t help but feeling like I was being watched. No one was there, but my TV was on, and Red Dead Redemption was booted up.
