Are there differences in the level of harassment between countries (specifically European vs. the U.S.)?

Hello AskWomen, I'm an American expat and I've been living abroad in Germany now for almost 30 years. After college I lived in the states for 3 years and had a little girl. When she was still very young we moved back to Europe.
Despite all my time over here I still identify strongly as an American and pay close attention to the goings on over there. Increasingly I hear about women who talk about sexual assault and harassment as though they were par for the course for a woman living in the United States.
Even if I didn't have a daughter that would be deeply disturbing, but obviously it led to me having conversations with her about what she should do and how much she can count on me for support in dealing with those things. Over the years I've tried to touch base with her regularly just to make sure that she isn't just not telling me about stuff because it's tragically too routine. She's 18 now and says the worst she's had to deal with was guys hitting on her occasionally, but the guys have always been respectful when she turned them down.
So now I'm wondering if there isn't a big difference for a woman in a European metropolitan setting to the experiences for the average woman in the U.S.. If there are any expat women who could give me their impressions of the differences between countries I'd be very interested in hearing them.
