Do I believe in monsters?
I could tell you that there’s no such thing.
It’s what most rational people say…
That there’s nothing under the bed,
And nothing goes bump in the night.

But I could also tell you stories of the night…
Things that make you think you’re going crazy.
I could tell you how I know monsters aren’t under the bed
They’re sitting in the middle of the floor
Watching you pretend to sleep.
That they move in the shadows
Or creep down walls.

I could warn you about the sounds of the night,
How they whisper from the open closet doors
Or right in your ears…
Telling you all your deepest fears.

I could tell you about the cold sweats of dread
And how blankets and eyes closed tight,
Don’t stop you from knowing that it’s sitting
There and that it’ll stay there all night.

Oh yes,
I could tell you they aren’t real,
It’s all in your head!
It’s just a nightmare.
Or maybe you’re going crazy?

But the truth is:
Nightmares fade over time
And I know I’m not crazy.
So do I believe in monsters?
Only when I try to sleep at night.
