Unfortunately, old usernames can't be restored nor can existing usernames be changed without doing what Mr. Ramtastic did and deleting your account and registering a new one with the new username.
Once you delete your account, that username is gone...forever.
Our DB and backend is quite extensive and the usernames are used in quite a few tables, which, together with the Forum tie-in, make it quite difficult to allow username changes without causing serious problems on the site. That's why the vast majority of sites do not allow you to change your username after you create your account.
So, folks, think twice before hitting that delete button! ;)
