I think they meant both... Keep the both of them completely seperate. State should not be run by a religion who is only out for it's own goals and advancement, and the Church should not be run by State, who are only trying to make money. Just the way I see it :)

They were fleeing a tyranny, a Catholic controlled tyranny (no offense to Catholics) and the FFs were Protestant, Lutheran,etc...and so our current conundrum began...

I agree with the fact that they wanted them seperate. And irish is right also. No one should be forced to beleive in anything they dont beleive in. If i want to beleive in fairys an leprechans so be it. Nobody else has to. People should be able to live peacefully and happily. Ram the starting of your thread. Amen to that.
