Reality Check: New limits coming soon to the number of Favorites / Dumps you can have (by Andres)

I got you Andres and I know...just couldn't resist lool Anyway, I do think Premiums should get a little more, but I still don't think it should be an unlimited thing since it has been a problem and you are cutting back. I think it would eventually turn out to be the same way really even if it's not a lot of premium members. If it's unlimited, it still could be a problem.
i do agree with this. I think doubling the limit would be good

OK, I see where you're coming from now. The thing is, I like to be able to offer things "unlimited" until I can't anymore, it's just in my nature. :) Unfortunately, I can no longer offer that to all users, but the number of Premium users is so low, that I can still offer that tiny fraction of the user base an unlimited amount of Favorites and Dumps if they want it (which it seems they do), and as long as Premium users never come close to representing the majority of users (which I don't think will ever happen), then I don't think I'll ever have to limit it for them. In other words, I don't like limiting until I have to (especially if I might not have to), even if it means getting a bit of flak if/when I'm forced to impose limits. Make sense?

At any rate, folks, these limits of 20 Favorites and 20 Dumps will be going live later today. Thanks to Omgitsjessi720's feedback, Premium users won't have any limits until further notice. Also, don't forget, we won't delete any of your existing Favorites and/or Dumps above the new limit, you just won't be able to add any new ones until you remove enough to fall below the limit. If you have a lot of Favorites or Dumps to remove, we've got you covered there as well, and have added a "Clear All" button to both the "Favorites" and "People I Dumped" pages so you can easily clear your lists and start over.

I'll report back when this feature is live.

Hi folks, this analysis and surprising results with the Favorites and Dumps made me want to look deeper to see where else we can find disproportionate uses of the site that are affecting site performance, and I'm afraid the next culprit is the Datinbox.

The reason I'm looking into improving the performance of the site is because our registration numbers have shot through the roof in the last month, having increased about 200% as we approach 200,000 users, which forces us to create a leaner site without the excesses of the past.

With regards to the Datinbox, even though we automatically delete all messages to/from Free users that are older than 31 days, we still have users with almost 2,000 messages in their Inbox from the current month alone, yet the average number of messages for users with at least 1 message in their Datinbox is just 8.22 messages (if we include all users, then the average is much lower). So just like with the Favorites and Dumps, this isn't an issue with the average users, only with a tiny minority using a very disproportionate amount of resources. However, this is an even bigger concern than the Favorites and Dumps because the messages take up a lot more space in the Database since every message and its full contents have to be stored, and the messaging system is the #1 used feature on the site.

So I'm afraid limits are coming to the Datinbox as well. That limit will be 25 messages in your Datinbox, which I think is very reasonable since it's more than 3 times the average. Again, this limit will only affect less than 1% of users, so more than 99% of you won't notice any difference. The limit of 25 messages in your Datinbox will also apply to the Sent folder (25 messages in your Inbox and 25 messages in your Sent folder).

The way these limits will work will be very simple. When you have more than 25 messages in your Inbox, you will still receive new messages. However, you will not be able to open any new messages until you have deleted enough messages to fall at or below the limit. This will force you to keep your Inbox clean, while ensuring you don't miss any new messages.

Likewise with the Sent folder, when you have 25 messages in your Sent folder, you will not be able to send any new messages until you have deleted enough messages to fall at or below the limit. So you can still send as many messages as before, you'll just be forced to keep things more tidy so that they don't pile on throughout the month and affect the performance of other users.

Of course, Premium users won't be affected by these changes since they already have an Unlimited Inbox.

As I continue to uncover more areas where we can streamline the site to improve (or at least maintain) performance as we continue to grow, I'll post them here so they're all in one place. In the meantime, I'll report back when these new limits on the Datinbox are live, which should be very soon.

Yup, but to be clear, nothing is "vanishing", you simply wouldn't be able to read those new messages until you deleted the old messages, but they'd still be there.

In other words, if you are a Free user and have 25 messages or more in your inbox and receive new ones, all your messages will still be there (old and new), you just won't be able to open the new ones until you delete enough old messages to fall at or below the new limit.

So you will still be able to send and receive just as many messages as before, you'll just have to continuously keep your Inbox tidy and clean if you tend to send and receive a lot of messages. Of course, if you tend to send and receive a very high amount of message, then this will require quite a bit of work on your part to continuously maintain.

Premium users, on the other hand, won't have to worry about any of this thanks to their Unlimited Inbox, so they won't be inconvenienced with continuously having to delete sent and received messages in order to send or read new messages.

i like the datinbox idea! So i was thinking is there a way there could be a clear all read messages only? Noone wants to clear out the messages if they havent read them. Of course this would not apply to sent but it seems a tad easier for those whom recieve alot of inboxes.
