I knew this would happen (by kellikel)

Ok so i am having the same problem. I havent been on here in a week and i HAVE NEVERRRR been rude to anyone, but there is one or two people that are upset cuz i dont chat with them, or cuz i dont agree with them on the forums, now i got negative karma?? Thats jus not rite!!! Andes u can read allll my messages and see i am very polite, having haters out there is going to ruin this karma idea thing u have goin on. We dont have to be rude or crude, people are jus being mean
Let me use an example to show why these types of people only punish themselves while having no effect on their intended victims.

Let's say you have Bad Boy Bob who likes to give negative Karma to everyone who doesn't bow down to him.

Now let's say Bad Boy Bob talks to 10 girls, none of whom want to give him the time of day.

Bad Boy Bob gives Girl #1 negative Karma. She gives him negative Karma back.
Bad Boy Bob gives Girl #2 negative Karma. She gives him negative Karma back.
...
Bad Boy Bob gives Girl #10 negative Karma. She gives him negative Karma back.

What's the final tally? Bad Boy Bob has a Karma of -10, and each of the girls has a Karma of -1. Since only Karma's below -3 have any effect, Bad Boy Bob has only punished himself with a severely negative Karma warning on his profile while having absolutely no effect on his intended victims all of whom are still well above the threshold.

And the above example is assuming each of the girls replied to Bad Boy Bob, because remember, a user can only give you Karma if you have sent them a message.

So I know it sucks to get negative Karma, especially when you don't deserve it, but it won't have any effect on you if you are generally a nice and friendly person because the positive Karma you receive will never let those few bad apples get you below the threshold.

That said, I can see how being warned about having received negative Karma can create a negative atmosphere on the site (especially since we don't let you know when you've received positive Karma), and that potential negative atmosphere is one of the reasons we don't warn users when they've been Dumped.

So let's try the Karma system without any warning messages being sent when you receive negative Karma and let's see how it plays out. It should make for an overall friendlier atmosphere without the constant negativity.

The day a nice and friendly person goes into severely negative Karma territory, I'll revamp the Karma system, but believe me when I say that it's currently working as intended in terms of exposing the serial harassers.

@andes Well since we dont know if Bad Boy Bob gave us neg karma we wouldnt give it back, and i havent sent any messages this week for anyone to give me neg karma or pos karma for that matter. So can someone go to past messages and give karma? I have checked in this pas week but didnt spend much time on here, so i have no idea how i could recieve karma at all, not saying i havent sent a message, im sure u could see whether i did or didnt, but all my messages are polite and usually jus saying thank u and nice to meet u, my name and asking about them, and things like that

Actually andres you can do what she is saying going into old messages i checked it out earlier. But dont change mine unless they harass me. but you can undo the karma while they are not online if you keep messages.

Sooo. You say no one has givin me bad or good. Ive been nice to lots of people. And no one gave me good karma. Also i probaly wont be passing out "points" to people. Not really my place to judge and we are all adults who dont always agree. And may say things others dont like. What you are saying is kind spitefull like trying to get revenge...you bad karma me ill bad karma you??? I guess. Personally i dont like it. But i am entitled to my opinion. And now im blowing it outta porportion. When all i did was simply state how i felt about the whole situation...in a respectful manner???? Once again wow! I was being honest...like usual. This is a perfect example as to why i would be hesitant on this site. First i have an issue then i get told im taking it too personally. I tell you what since i have been logging back in i havent responded to any new messages.

Yes, Karma can be granted on old messages since the "Give Karma" feature appears on every message you view, old and new.

I think you misunderstood me and my intentions. I never said you weren't respectful or honest, I said I thought you were blowing it out of proportion because you were complaining about having received negative Karma when you no longer had any negative Karma, and I said I thought you were taking it too personally because -- at the end of the day -- it was just one negative internet point that some stranger gave you that has absolutely no effect on your account and which you already know you did not deserve. I think that was a fair assessment and I didn't mean to upset you (my apologies if I did), I just wanted to help you understand the Karma system better so that you would realize that even if you had received the negative Karma and it stuck, it would have had absolutely no affect on your account and would therefore be nothing to worry about.

All that said, based on the feedback I have been receiving, last night I made the change to no longer warn users when they receive negative Karma. This should avoid retaliation and a negative atmosphere around the whole System.

I do want to make it absolutely clear that despite all these complaints, it is actually working very well. If we ever do get a friendly and respectful user that gets the severely negative Karma warning on their profile, I'll deal with it immediately. This isn't a corporate site with a strict policy, so if there is any injustice, I'll happily look into it and resolve it.

Admin, tonight, i'd notice that whenever I'm about to reply to the message on my inbox, there is a reminder at the bottom telling me to be nice (yesterday it wasn't there). What it implies for?

Everyone sees that message now. Since we no longer warn users when they recieve negative Karma, we've added a reminder on the Send Message page for everyone to be nice and respectful to avoid negative Karma. That's all.
