Once,I took my son to the polar caves and a woman was telling her daughters that the mowhawk tribe were vicious savages because the caves had sheltered the pemegiwassit tribe for a time from.the mowhawks. (my son is half mowhawk and knows this quite well) I could not correct her except to say to my son in a loud voice"yes boy you are part mowhawk, this is where your ancestors chased a weaker tribe. What were they fighting for? Who can say? An insult? A woman? Resources? There are no written records. " She looked at me as though she would cry or slap me. maybe both. But she stormed off quickly. I looked at my son,who looked at me no longer ashamed by that womans words, and I said to him"never be ashamed that your ancestors were strong." To this day,he is not arrogant but still proud of his blood.

That was very smart to do it the way you did it. Without confronting her. Bravo. No one should be ashamed of the heritage at all.

The day a child realizes all adults are imperfect he becomes an adolescent. The day he forgives them he becomes an adult. The day he forgives himself he becomes wise.

Listen to and respect your elders for you may think they are the past but their past paved the way for your future.
