While I applaud the work of conservationists, would it not be a better lesson for future generations to see how many animals have vanished due to over-farming, habitat reduction etc to make them bring about more efficient/nature friendly methods of doing things?

The donkey could have atleast been killed in a humane matter before being fed to the lions and being tortured. The poor thing was eatin alive, scared to death! That's NOT what God put him on this Earth for.

@shellyme: I have indeed visited a zoo, whilst it was lovely to see all the breeds etc, I can't help thinking they would look even better in the wild - not pacing cages, unable to enjoy freedom, purely so that people can stand and stare.

I couldn't agree more - that was sickening.

maybe in some instances but they wont have a future to see if some extinct animals are gone because they are important to our ecosystem

animals are eaten alive every day in the wild - it's the food chain. what I feel strongly about in this case is the cold-hearted human element.
