Update

"" More than a thousand people may be dead in the wake of
the most powerful storm on record this year, according to
NBC News. Unconfirmed estimates from the Philippine
Red Cross suggest that at least 1,200 people may have
died in the storm—1,000 in the coastal city of Tacloban,
and at least 200 more in the Samar province.
The typhoon slammed into six central Philippine islands
on Friday, wiping away buildings and leveling seaside
homes. According to the Associated Press, at least 138
people were confirmed dead.
Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said it's too early to know
how many have died but he expects, "a very high number
of fatalities as well as injured," from the storm, which was
heading toward Vietnam after moving away from the
Philippines.
"All systems, all vestiges of modern living —
communications, power, water — all are down," he said.
"Media is down, so there is no way to communicate with
the people in a mass sort of way."
President Benigno Aquino III said the government's
priority was to restore power and communications in
isolated areas to allow for the delivery of supplies and
medical assistance to victims.""Link.

Initial estimates show roughly 10,000 people died in the central Philippine province of Leyte after Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, lashed the province, swallowing coastal towns, a senior police official said on Sunday.

About 70 to 80 percent of the area in the path of Haiyan in Leyte province was destroyed, said Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria.

"We had a meeting last night with the governor and the other officials. The governor said based on their estimate, 10,000 died," Soria told Reuters.http://www.cbc.ca/m/touch/world/story/1.2420971not sure if 10,000 is correct tho. 1200 Seems to be what other news reports say. Still very sad.
