Had that happen to me with my ex, after nine years and two kids...We had been separated for about a month and she decided to end it with an e mail..I laugh about it now, but wasn't laughing at the time I read it.

Pathetic? Yes or no? I woke up today to read a wonderful message from my now ex boyfriend basically saying goodbye out of the blue...ugh! I have the worst luck with relationships
Actually, I know this is going to seem backwards, but breaking up no matter how it's done produce the same results if one of the partners wasnt exactly ready to call it quits. Maybe he sent an email to be a jerk about it. And then again maybe not. The important thing is you got a clear answer. No head games (or no more head games) ...no having you hang on by a limb. You do know now and you should be thankful it's over if you think that's how much he cares for you. Just believe him and do not second guess...move on. It hurts and it's hard but you can do it. You can move on and search for someone you can date, fully enjoy being with , and possibly turn into something special with. Let it all go girl so you can be happy :)
