I could Ruin Your Life so Easily

You likely don?t believe what the title of this post says. If you don?t, you should reconsider that for your own safety.
To you, I am a stranger. A person online on a screen across the world or possibly closer. I could be living in the house just across from you, I could be living in the house next to you, I could be someone walking next to you at this moment, and you would never even know it. If I wanted to, I could find you, and you could find me. The internet holds many ways to find someone, ways we would prefer not to think about so we can feel a semblance of safety online and not feel as if we have to look over our shoulders all the time. Maybe I am a stalker who has been quietly watching your account and delving into your information to track you down. Perhaps I was the one who hurt you so recently in a way that left you to ask why the world despises you.
But those are just possibilities that seem unlikely to happen. After all, I?m just one person, and often, people rarely harm random people and are more likely to harm those they know. But one does not need to have history with someone to want to harm them. I am doing this because I want to. I?m doing this because I know I can. If I messaged you, informing I am coming to harm you, you would likely report me to whoever you thought responsible to stop me. Say I continue to harass you and tell you that I will find you, and you turn to the authorities. You wait anxiously to hear that I have been caught, fearing of your own safety. You do not know who or where I am, and that frightens you.
Then, one day on the news, you hear I had been arrested, the station used by username so you?re sure it?s me. You also now know the name of your harasser so that provides you a feeling of power when you had recently felt so powerless. You hear how long I am going to be in jail, and for a small moment, you feel a sense of relief, just before reality sets in. I will be released one day. When I am released, who says I won?t follow you and make good on my threats? Your heart is pounding and you?re afraid. You can?t sleep soundly because you dread the date of my release, or my eventual escape. I could have escaped between the time of the broadcast of my arrest and now, couldn?t I? You would never know. Maybe I am outside your home right now and searching for a way to get in.
Your heart is accelerating at an alarming rate and you feel as if you cannot breathe. You wonder my appearance, pondering what I look like to try and determine how hard it would be to escape me. You wonder if you should buy a weapon to defend yourself from your potential assailant. Maybe you consider strengthening your security system, but what would that do to your finances? You wonder if you should skip town and move somewhere else, but then you think of two other things. How will your loved ones react, and what if I find you after all the trouble you went through to avoid me? Would you really toss away your current life to run away from someone you don?t know because you fear they might find you? If you do, then I have destroyed your current life.
Maybe you have a stronger stomach for these kinds of things. Maybe you just don?t care and continue on with your life. After all, if you feared for every single possible thing that could happen, you would never be able to live your life. But there is more to my words then you may see originally. This is not a threat. This is a warning. There are people online who are constantly on the prowl in search of someone to make a victim. They could effortlessly ruin your life if they decided to, and there is a chance they may not be caught. You would never know who has their eyes on you at this moment. Maybe multiple people are watching you right now, after all, the internet is so massive with billions of people online with unknown intentions. We are not safe. The moment you first went online, you became a target for monsters hiding in plain sight.
At the end of the day, these are all just possibilities, but they still have a chance of happening. Do you ever feel as if you are being watched? Sometimes, I hear rustles coming from outside of my window. My mind concludes that it is most likely just an animal or the rustling of the wind against my home. But sometimes, the rustling sounds too heavy to just be the wind or an animal. Sometimes I see flashes and I wonder if it?s just the sunlight, but what if it?s a camera flash going off? I try to keep myself hidden online because I am afraid, but I could learn to become a hunter instead. It is not hard with how much of the internet we have access to. You could do the same if you so desired. Doesn?t the thought drive you mad? The fact that there is a decent chance that someone online is after you right now? We will likely never be safe, and someone sadistic, malicious, or simply curious, could ruin our lives in an instant. They don?t have to kill you or harm you in some other unspeakable way, they simply have to remind you of the fact that you are never safe, no matter how much you want to cling to the false hope that you are. By doing that, they have already ruined your life.
I told you before. I could ruin your life so easily.
