bonfire

for the past few years, clara's spring breaks have all been the same. meeting up with friends, going to the beach, etc. this year, she wanted to shake it up a bit. clara rented a lovely secluded cabin in the middle of kentucky. three stories tall, with a great big lake out back. across the lake was a small clearing before going into the forest.
she packed the essentials, clothing, snacks, and her phone. it took around 3 hours to get there, but the drive was worth it. the cabin looked so much greater on the inside. she arrived at about 5:00 in the afternoon, watched T.V. until 7:00, and made a frozen pizza for dinner at 8:00. she looked outside to the small clearing that the cabin advertised, and made a mental note to go out there tomorrow. it looked really cozy too, with a bonfire pit in the middle and various logs surrounding it.
before unpacking the rest of her stuff, she came to an upsetting realization; she didn't pack a charger for her phone. she let out a groan of frustration, and flopped onto her bed in defeat. "it's gonna be alright" she told herself. "it's only three days. besides, just enjoy the scenery, you'll survive without your phone."
at 10:00 she got dressed into her pjs, brushed her teeth, took her cholesterol medication, and scanned the house one last time to make sure all the doors and windows were locked. right before she finished scanning the basement, she noticed a faint orange glow emanating from the pitch black darkness outside. she was puzzled, and looked out of the patio window to the lake. the bonfire was burning, with a figure sitting just across from it, it's head looking down at the ground.
clara's heart dropped into her stomach. she didn't know what to do. she was horrified. she was supposed to be all alone at the cabin, the nearest people at least five miles away. what was this person doing here? the figure's head snapped up suddenly, and clara gasped. even from a distance, she could make out it's face.
it was horrific. it's eyes were huge, with very tiny pupils. it had a large ear to ear grin, with way to many pearly white teeth. it looked around the property, until it locked eyes with clara. it began to stand up, maintaining eye contact with clara the whole time. it was at least 9 feet tall, with really long and spindly arms. clara stood perfectly still, trying to come up with a plan to somehow book it to her car before it could possibly reach her. before she could put her plan in action however, the creature began sprinting towards the cabin, it ran with long and drawn out strides being across the lake in under 15 seconds.
clara screamed in terror, and ran upstairs out of the basement. everything was in slow motion to her. she heard an unearthly loud and deep voice crying out from the backyard as it quickly reached the cabin, which only caused her more panic as she stumbled through the cabin. she ran into her room upstairs and locked it. she hid under her bed, heavily breathing. she silently wept as the creature broke through the glass patio door and began to tear up the cabin looking for her.
she wished that someone would save her, that someone would somehow rescue her and get her away from this cabin. after a while, she just wished for someone to be there with her, at least she wouldn't be completely alone. but of course, she was completely alone. nobody was around to help, and she hated that thought. as the creature was looking for her, it let out a long and drawn out "CLAAAAAAARA" this caused her to yelp, and all the noise stopped. her heart was beating at least 90 times faster now.
she heard from downstairs in the kitchen, loud, booming footsteps. she heard them in the kitchen, then the dining room, then the foyer near the stairs. she could only sit and weep and the booming footsteps reached the hallway, and then the outside of her room. the creature identified her room as the one she was hiding in, and began pounding on the door. in a matter of seconds, the door was almost to the point of splintering. in a moment of almost comedic irony, clara realized that she was dead wrong when she told herself that she'll survive just fine without her phone.
