My son found something strange at the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant. Now it's in our house and I'm terrified.
"Don't you have that school trip today?" I remembered some remark yesterday that Adam made complaining about the fact that he wouldn't be able to take his phone on some trip or another.
"We're going to the power plant today." Adam said as he typed out something on his phone, "It's bull**** that we can't take our phones with us."
"Language!" My wife Rose said as she looked up from whatever article she had been reading on her IPad.
"Sorry mom. But this trip is complete BS. They're taking us to one of the coolest places in the entire state and they won't even let us take pictures of it. There's already a billion photos of the place from the outside and they won't let us take them in."
I sighed and looked at Adam, "I'm sure they have plenty of good reasons for that. I mean, they wouldn't want any seventh graders leaking secrets to North Korea, right?"
Rose looked up at me in annoyance while Adam chuckled, "Mind if I tell Mr. Reynolds that? He was just talking about Korea in class yesterday and he would probably find it hilarious."
"It's not funny Adam. It's the largest power plant in the United States and whether they want to keep secrets from leaking or if they just want to keep kids from taking selfies in front of an active nuclear reactor they have a damn good reason for wanting to keep cameras out of the place."
I looked up and saw the annoyance on my wife's face. Adam sighed, looked back down at his phone, and furiously typed something.
"Are you okay Rose?" I asked.
She sighed, "I'm fine. I just get annoyed with all of the crazy anti-nuclear talk we've been getting since that stupid HBO show started."
Her stress over the past couple of weeks made more sense now. She worked in the PR department for one of the companies that owned the power plant itself, APS, and was one of the major reasons Adam's school got chosen to visit the plant for a tour in the first place.
"You going to be okay without your phone for a couple of hours buddy?"
"Sure..." Adam said. He glanced at his mother, who was staring at her IPad again, then turned back to me and winked.

I looked down at the most recent message Adam had sent me. It showed a view from the window of the school bus with large concrete structures in the distance.
"Less than ten minutes. Wish me luck getting past the phone past the guards!" The message under the picture read.
I took a last puff of the cigarette in my mouth. It was dead inside of the Pizza Hut so I could probably get away with another one before I went back inside.
"Get me some secrets to sell to the North Koreans so I can quit managing a fast food place." I typed out and sent.
"Lol. Unless the Iranians can give us more!"
I laughed and put the phone back in my pocket. I contemplated taking another cigarette and lighting up but was interrupted when the opening driver leaned out of the door and informed me of an order that had just popped up on the make table. That order was followed by another as the lunch rush began in earnest. So I didn't notice the next message he sent until almost half an hour after it sent it.
It was a picture of him in front of a mirror in the tile floored room of what I can only assume to be one of the many bathrooms in the power plant. It showed a reflection of him holding the phone up with one hand and the other with it's thumb pointed straight into the air.
"They didn't even have any security! I just had to tell the chaperone that I left my phone at home. Lol."
I looked up at the make screen and saw that it had a single personal pan pizza to make so I typed out a quick response, "Be careful. I don't want to have to explain this to your mother if you get caught."
He didn't respond, but I didn't really expect him to reply as he was supposed to be touring a nuclear power plant. Which is why I was surprised when he sent another photo less than a minute after I texted him.

"I tried ducking out of the tour group for a second to take a pic for you but the camera's not working for some reason."
I looked at the picture he sent and saw no detail at all. There could be a nuclear reactor in the picture or it could just be the inside of his pocket for all I know.
I looked at the time for the order to see it at 2 minutes and thirty seconds. I had time to text him back.
"Stop running off from the group kiddo. Your mom is only going to get madder if she finds out you kept running off from the group."
I wanted to type more but didn't have time as the computer beeped and a second order popped up on the screen. I was getting a bit annoyed with his behavior at this point. I always tried to encourage a bit of childhood rebellion in him but decided that this was probably not one of the times I should be doing that.
But I also had a paycheck to earn so I stuffed the phone back in my pocket and made the orders for the ungrateful customers that really needed a pizza at two in the afternoon.
I didn't hear the ringtone go off over the next twenty minutes while I made the orders the popped up. After the customers came to pick them up I was pretty worried so I tried sending another message.
"Hey kiddo, you meet back up with group ok?"
I saw the little dots indicating the message was trying to send for a couple of seconds before I got a message back.
"Message could not be sent. Try again later."
This automated message worried me so I tried sending it again.
"Message could not be sent. Try again later."
As I tried to send the message a third time, now truly worrying for my sons safety, I got the phone call from his school.

They said they've searched the entirety of where he could've wandered off to but couldn't find him for some reason. Rose and I got to the plant as quickly as we could but weren't allowed inside to look because of the obvious security concerns. You would think they would let the parents of a missing child look for it, but apparently national security prevents us from even doing that.
It's past midnight, and with nothing to do besides wait for any word of him we've sat and paced around our bedroom for longer than I care to mention. Which is where we were when we got the dump of text messages from his phone as it reconnected to a tower after a long period of time.
This place is weird. But I'm pretty sure I know where I am. - 2:27 PM
Dad, could you call Mr. Reynolds? He's the chaperone on our trip here and I'm lost - 3:13 PM
I keep hearing this really weird sound and I'm getting kind of creeped out - 3:37 PM
These messages keep saying they're not going out but please call someone dad the sound is getting louder. It sounds like hissing - 4:02 PM
**** **** **** I saw it its dark dad please - 4:37 PM
Dad, is it? That's what this little screen says you are. Your son was a lot faster than I expected. But not fast enough. - 5:32 PM
Damn, this little thing says it's not sending messages. But there is an address saved in here. Is it yours? - 5:39 PM
It's a bit far away. But I'll be there in a little while... - 5:42 PM
Like any good parent of a missing child I began calling the number of the Power Plant representative that had been calling us throughout the night to update us on just where the **** our kid was. But I didn't get the chance to as I received another text from his number. The time it was sent from was fifteen minutes ago.

Just like the last photo he sent the camera is ludicrously dark, but I would recognize it anywhere. It's the top of the stairs taken from the second floor of our house.
From outside the bedroom we are currently in.
The picture also had a message attached to it.
"I'm here..."
Rose tried opening the door a couple minutes ago and managed to open it an inch before it slammed back and knocked her into the side table next to our bed. Whatever had slammed the door laughed from behind the door, it's shadow extending from under it and penetrating the sanctimony of our safety.
After making sure Rose was okay I prepared myself and smashed myself into the door while turning the knob only to crash into nothing blocking it.
The small hallway was completely empty. No shape to match the shadow that had been in front of the bedroom door only a couple of seconds before.
But there was something resting on the small banister next to the stairs.
A charred and blackened cell phone.
