He's watching me and I can't tell my parents

I had never kept a secret from my family until this happened...

My family and I ate every meal around the dinner table together and when there were arguments between my siblings and I my dad always said, “Even if you’re yelling, at least you’re still communicating.†Communication was important in our family, we never kept secrets.

When I was thirteen we moved into a new house, it was bigger than our last and even had an upstairs. It was perfect for our family of six!

I started getting the feeling early, within the first week of moving in. Whenever I walked up the stairs a sudden chill would tickle the back of my neck. I could sense something was not right in the room and my instincts would scream at me to run. It would happen day or night, but it was stronger after the sun went down.

I honestly thought it was the air-conditioning and brought it up to my dad. That's when he pointed out there were no vents in the stair well. He suggested it was the window at the top of the stairs. “It's probably a draft coming through an old seal,†he said. With no clear answers there was one thing I knew for sure—the source of this fear came from the large round window at the top of the stairs.

As the season moved toward Fall I convinced myself it was just a drafty window and tried to push the fear down whenever I went up stairs. My hope was that ignoring the window would make things better. It only made things worse.

One night I was coming down the stairs and, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone watching me in the window. It was a simple, dark, and hunched shadow with two milky eyes catching the moonlight. It was watching me. I turned on the light, but whomever was there... vanished. I mustered up the courage to see what was outside and slowly crept toward the windowsill. What I found was the 15 foot drop to the ground below. Nothing more.

That proved it. It must just be the dark playing tricks on my eyes, right? I told myself there was no way someone perched themselves in my window day in and day out. I rushed from the room and promised myself to never tell a soul what I thought I saw. Honestly? I believed I was slowly loosing my mind and I didn't want to frighten my family. I couldn't tell them I was going crazy.

Night after night for months I would pass the window alone and from the corner of my eye I'd see someone watching me in the dark. My body would shake and a pit would swell in my stomach but I refused to look at whomever was in the window. Then, late one night I got up to use the bathroom. I passed the window and kept my eyes down. I felt the shadow's unblinking eyes stuck to me as I crossed the window but I didn't look at it. Just when I thought I was safe I heard a whisper...

"Jane."

It knew my name. I stopped using the upstairs completely after that. I slept on the couch in the living room and had my sister bring my clothes down for me. I was tense, irritable, and terrified. My friends and family noticed my personality change, but I never said a word, choosing to let my sanity slip in silence.

Then one day, out of the blue, I came home from school and the window was covered. My parents had installed french blinds in front of that horrible round window. I was thrilled!

That simple change had lifted a gigantic weight off my shoulders and cleared the fog around my head. It had confirmed my hope all along, the thing in the window was simply my wild imagination getting the better of me. I was not going crazy! Everyone around me noticed my sunny outlook on life had returned and I moved back into my room. My family was back to normal.

The next evening my older brother stopped me on the stairs. He asked casually, “What’s got you in such a great mood all of a sudden?†I lied and replied, “No reason. I’m just happy.†His face changed, he became very angry. He demanded an answer but I refused to tell.

He stared at me and his angry face slacked and turned white with fear, then he muttered...

"Because it was watching you too, wasn’t it?â€
