Introducing the "Activity Feed": see what everyone is up to around the site! (by Andres)

Hi Folks,

I'm happy to announce one of the biggest, most addictive, most entertaining additions to the site, the Activity Feed!

The Activity Feed shows you all the recent "live"activity on the site, so you can see what others are up to right now, connect more easily with similar people, and discover new content all in one place and in real-time. You'll see everything from new pic uploads to users walking through the door to new Forum posts and everything in between. Each activity from each user includes their profile pic, basic profile info, the activity they just did, plus an "action link" to interact with their activity, such as a link to send a message to someone who is checking out their Datinbox, or to wink at a user searching for users Online Now, or to check out the Forum Thread they just posted. All activity is shown from most recent to oldest, with how long ago the activity happened appearing in the lower right-hand corner of each activity. Of course, since we are a Dating site, you will only see activity from users who are of the gender you are seeking and who also happen to be seeking your gender, in order to keep things relevant for you.

The Feed itself is pretty self-explanatory once you see it, but the biggest change you will notice is that the Activity Feed is now the default "Home" screen. That's right, the stale and static old Home screen has been replaced with an ever-changing, fun, and interactive live feed of the site. This will ensure it becomes one of the most seen and used features so that everyone can see what everyone is up to and connect a lot better. Everything else will radiate from the Activity Feed since almost all features of the site are tied to it and will show up as new "activity" on there when used, giving more exposure to all the different features of the site.

You will also notice a "Show Only Content" link on the top right-hand corner of the Activity Feed. If you click this link, it will filter out non-content-related activity, so you can discover new content on the site even easier! For example, activity that's considered "content" are things like Blog Posts, Forum Polls, uploading new pics, updating your Profile, updating your Status Message, etc. In other words, activity that in some way involves the creation of new content (words, pics, etc.). Activities that are not considered "content" are things like a user registering, logging in, checking their Datinbox, searching for users Online Now, etc. Those kinds of activities show up in the default Activity Feed but are filtered-out when the "Show Only Content" link is hit.

Also, at the very bottom of the Feed, you will see a "Show more..." link. Click it to see older activity (always 10 at a time). If you want to refresh the Activity Feed with recent, real-time activity, just hit the "REFRESH button below the feed.

To keep active users from clogging the Activity Feed, we only show at most one update per minute per user, unless it's new content (which is added to the Activity Feed immediately). That's to ensure new content never gets missed and always gets discovered, while rewarding users who create new content with more exposure on the Activity Feed. That's right, the more active you are on the site, and the more content you create, the more you'll be seen by other users, and therefore the greater your chances of love finding you!

So you're no longer limited to just being seen in a handful of places around the site. You'll now be seen by all relevant and potential suitors checking out the Feed every time you do "something" on the site. That's part of what makes checking out the Feed regularly so much fun, as you get see what everyone's up to right now while taking the "pulse" of the site.

Of course, Premium users get extra benefits, as always. Not only are the activities of Premium users highlighted in yellow like their profiles in search results, but Premium users also get a 10% lower time-limit on when their activity is added to the Feed, so they can get up to 10% more activity listed on the Feed. On top of that, several Premium-only features of the site such as the Blog Posts, Status Messages, and Additional Pics are also considered "activity", giving Premium users more opportunities to "make it" on the Feed and be seen. That triple-whammy of additional exposure on the Activity Feed will ensure Premium users get seen a lot more, once again increasing their chances of being found by someone special!

Now, I'm sure that most of you are asking yourselves, "but where can I find the old Home screen?" Well, don't worry, because at the top of the new Home screen, you will see two tabs, "Activity Feed" and "Menu", and the "Menu" tab contains the old Home screen you're all used to seeing, so it's still easily accessible. This "tab" feature also allows you to quickly and easily switch between the Activity Feed and the old Home screen which just a single click.

Oh, and although I've tested it extensively, I doubt I got everything perfectly "right" from the get-go, so don't hesitate to report any bugs and/or make any suggestions with this new feature in this thread! Either way, let me know what you think after checking it out and playing around with it for a bit!

So what are you waiting for? Go see what everyone's up to right now!

Have fun! ;)

Update: Two new options added for Premium users in their "My Settings" page: 1) Hide my Activity from the Feed and 2) Make the Menu my default Home screen

I've been on for a while and it was a surprize to see it when I clicked on the home page and it showed up. I thought I did something wrong. Lol

We should have an option to disable it, if we want to.
